In The Money: New Data Hub for UC Berkley

its raining money

UC Berkley this week received its largest gift donation in its history to fund the development of its Data Science hub. Already a sort-after institution renowned for its STEM programs this further puts it on the cutting edge of the Big Data world and is shy almost a 100 million dollars of Blackstone CEO – Schwarzman’s donation to fund MIT’s Artificial Intelligence college almost 2 years ago.

This is already Berkley’s fastest new area of study and allows it to develop a physical presence that will connect leading minds in the study of Data Science and its transformative effect on society. Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Paul Alivisatos said “The Data Hub will be the home base for this dynamic new teaching, learning, and research environment.”

Each year, approximately 6000 bright and eager undergraduates embark on a Data Science course at Berkley and it is the fastest growing major for them closely approaching the size of their computer science program already ranked number one in a tie with other reputable ivies like MIT, Stanford and Carnegie Mellon by US News.

The building will contain an array of fascinating amenities including a robotics and artificial intelligence lab. Alivisatos added “Berkeley faculty and students are advancing the foundations of computing and data science at a rapid pace, while harnessing these tools to revolutionize biomedicine, engineering, environmental science and other critical disciplines. I’m delighted that the Division of Computing, Data Science, and Society is taking flight, and the Data Hub will become the space where all these efforts intersect.”
