Uber is stepping up their safety measures by requiring all drivers to use face masks on the job, and artificial intelligence will be there to ensure that everyone complies.
According to the company’s press release, every driver needs to confirm that they’ve taken safety measures through a new Go Online Checklist. The AI program will verify if the driver is wearing a mask through a selfie. Once the tech confirms compliance, the AI will then inform the rider through the app.
Uber is rolling out this new requirement in the United States, Canada, India, and most of Europe starting May 18, 2020. Without a mask or face cover, drivers will not be allowed to go online and pick up passengers.
Recognizing that safety goes both ways, Uber also rolled out a similar checklist for riders. Each passenger must confirm that they’ve taken precautions like washing or sanitizing their hands.
The company gives accountability to both parties. Drivers or passengers can cancel the trips if they don’t feel safe, like if the other shows up without a mask on, without penalty. Those who repeatedly violet the safety measures may end up losing access to Uber.
